According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United talent Owen Bailey was in first-team training with the Magpies today ahead of this weekend’s game against Huddersfield Town.

The Magpies face a crucial game against the Terriers this weekend, as a win would help drag Rafael Benitez’s men further way from the relegation zone and closer to Premier League survival.

Benitez and co will have been running checks on the Newcastle squad ahead of their return to Premier League action, with Matt Ritchie one player returning from international duty with an injury.

Ritchie was in training today, and there were two surprise faces joining him and the rest of the Newcastle squad, as Daniel Barlaser – currently on loan at Crewe Alexandra – and defender Owen Bailey were both in training.

Bailey, 19, may not be a familiar name to some Newcastle fans, but he is a hometown boy who has come up through the ranks with the Magpies, having been signed at the age of just seven.

The teenager is predominantly a centre back who can also play at right back, meaning that he will be competing with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune over the coming years.

Bailey is unlikely to feature this weekend, but with Newcastle hoping to bring through young talents after some dry years from their academy well, they will be hoping that defender Bailey steps up soon.
