Destro was linked with a summer move to Newcastle.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato claim Bologna striker Mattia Destro is free to leave in the January transfer window, which could come as a huge boost to Newcastle United.

TuttaBolognaWeb claimed earlier this year that Newcastle and Watford were eyeing a move for the 27-year-old striker in the summer, in a bid to boost their options up front.

Destro boasts plenty of experience in Italy’s top tier, with 208 Serie A appearances to his name but he has fallen down the pecking order at Bologna – managing just 184 minutes of game time this season.

Indeed, the eight-time Italy international has been left on the bench for the last four outings with Bologna. The report claims Destro is “destined” to leave his current club in the January transfer window.

That could see either Newcastle or Watford reignite their interest in the striker, with The Toon desperate for a striker who can fire the Magpies to safety. Rafa Benitez’s men have only scored six Premier League goals all season.

Destro, who scored 29 goals in 68 games for AS Roma earlier on in his career, has a contract at Bologna until the summer of 2020 but he is likely to be available on the cheap as Bologna want him gone.
