Newcastle have reportedly missed out on Zenit attacker Sardar Azmoun, with the Iranian international set to join Ligue 1 side Lyon in January.
According to RMC Sport, the French club have submitted a €4m (£3.3m) offer for the 26-year-old forward, with the report stating that Lyon have already reached personal terms with Azmoun for a winter move.
The Russian Premier League star has been linked with numerous Premier League clubs heading into January, with Sky Sports News recently reporting that Newcastle were in the race for Azmoun.
However, it now looks like the former FC Rostov star will make the move to Lyon in the New Year, with Newcastle seemingly missing out on a bargain striker in Azmoun.
Callum Wilson was injured in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Monday. And with the forward likely to miss the remainder of the season, a new hitman up-front is now needed for Eddie Howe’s side.
Moreover, Azmoun could have been a perfect striker for Newcastle, especially with Lyon likely to sign the forward for just £3.3m, an absolute steal in this market.
Newcastle will struggle to find better value than Lyon-bound Azmoun

With ten goals in all competitions this season and a player who has been linked to the Premier League for some time, Lyon are landing a coup with Azmoun if they can strike a deal with Zenit.
As for Newcastle, it puts the Magpies back to square one over who they should sign in January to replace Wilson, who will be a big loss for the club in their efforts to stay up this season.
