Newcastle United are currently the leading candidates to sign Hamza Choudhury from Leicester City, the Athletic claim.
Choudhury has struggled for game time with Leicester this season, and Newcastle and West Bromwich are now the joint front-runners for his signature.
The Foxes have yet to make their mind up over whether to allow the 23-year-old to leave, and their decision could be left until the very end of the month, so any deal could go down to the wire.
That means Steve Bruce may face a nervy wait to find out if his side will be able to land the defensive midfielder, who Harvey Barnes labelled as a ‘great player’ (Leicester Mercury), even though they are well positioned.
Choudhury is not said to have picked a favourite club to join, he just wants regular game time.
Whether Newcastle would actually be able to offer him that remains to be seen.
Choudhury is of a similar mould to Isaac Hayden, who is a trusted member of Bruce’s side.
But Newcastle clearly need a freshen up, and Choudhury’s arrival could at least inject some energy into their performances, which has been desperately lacking of late.
