Reyes has been linked with a move to both Newcastle and West Ham.

French newspaper L’Equipe have claimed that Ligue 1 side Bordeaux are set to win the race for Mexico defender Diego Reyes after his contract with FC Porto expired – which sees West Ham United and Newcastle United miss out.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato claimed earlier this week that Newcastle were in talks to sign the 25-year-old, and were close to an agreement, while Sky Sports credited both Newcastle and West Ham with interest last week.

However, it seems as though both Premier League clubs are set to miss out on the 55-time Mexico international, who is set to agree a deal to sign for Gus Poyet’s Bordeaux in a shock move that sees Reyes pick French football over the Premier League.

Interest in Reyes has been widespread, but Bordeaux look set to win the race to sign Reyes, which sees them replace the loss of Pablo Castro who has joined Russian side Krasnodar.

It is believed that Reyes is now in France with Bordeaux officials in a bid to thrash out a deal, and is expected to sign a long-term contract with Poyet’s men – in what is a slightly surprising move.

What Bordeaux do have to offer that Newcastle and West Ham cannot compete with, is European football, after their sixth-placed finish saw the French outfit enter the second round of Europa League qualifying against FK Ventspils.

Newcastle needed a centre-back after selling Chancel Mbemba to Reyes’ former side, while West Ham still want cover despite signing Fabien Balbuena and Issa Diop.
