The Mail claim Newcastle and Watford are trying to sign Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury on loan. The Englishman almost joined Newcastle on loan during Steve Bruce’s tenure on Tyneside.
Choudhury, 24, has started just three Premier League matches for Leicester this season under Brendan Rodgers. The Toon are said to be after a midfielder, reigniting interest that first came with Bruce in charge.
But Newcastle face competition from Claudio Ranieri’s Watford for the signature of Choudhury. The two sides are considering loan moves for the England Under-21 ace, a player that has been likened to Javier Mascerhano.
Brendan Rodgers compared the Leicester star to ex-Liverpool and Argentina midfielder Mascherano earlier this season, as per The Athletic: “I called Hamza last night to say he was going to be the new Mascherano.”
Newcastle eye Choudhury again: Should the Toon really sign him?
Newcastle do need better quality in the middle of the park. Jonjo Shelvey is arguably the club’s best option, but Jeff Hendrick, Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff need improving. Joe Willock is more of a 10.
Eddie Howe needs a player that is going to score goals from midfield, but one that can also prove to be a bit box-to-box. A driving force in their fight against the drop. Is Choudhury that? Probably not.
However, his addition would add some much-needed depth at Newcastle. But given the names they have been linked with, and the financial power the Toon now have – surely, Amanda Staveley and co. can do better.
