According to The Mirror (16/08, p67), Newcastle United are rivalling Southampton for the signature of Burnley striker Chris Wood.

It’s claimed that Wood is rated at around £13million, which seems a little on the low side for a Premier League striker with three years left on his contract.

When you add in that Burnley paid £15million to sign Wood from Leeds United three years ago, it seems unfathomable for them to take a loss – even with the impact of the global pandemic.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl allegedly feels that Wood is the ideal partner for Danny Ings – another striker who thrived at Burnley – whilst Steve Bruce wants players with proven records in England.

Wood ticks that box; he scored 14 Premier League goals last season, and has hit double figures in the top flight in three consecutive campaigns.

The 28-year-old is a big, strong focal point up top, and has bags of experience on the international stage too, racking up 57 caps and 24 goals with New Zealand.

Newcastle need a goalscorer given Joelinton’s well-publicised struggles in front of goal, and whilst Wood may not be a ‘sexy’ option, he does bring goals.

That £13million price is surely wide of the mark, but with Newcastle closing in on Jeff Hendrick, they could reunite him with ex-Burnley teammate Wood this summer.
