Report: Newcastle and Manchester United interested in Dimitri Oberlin

Newcastle United and Manchester United are reportedly interested in RB Salzburg-owned FC Basel striker Dimitri Oberlin.

Newcastle United are interested in signing Dimitri Oberlin from RB Salzburg in the January transfer window, according to The Sun.

Oberlin is on loan at Swiss club FC Basel from Austrian side Salzburg and is reportedly valued at £20 million.

It has been reported that Manchester United scouts have tracked the 20-year-old, who played for Basel against Jose Mourinho’s side in the Champions League.

According to The Sun, Newcastle manager Benitez is in pole position to sign the Switzerland Under-21 international, but the Spaniard must offload Serbia international striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has struggled for playing time so far this season.

The youngster has scored four goals in four starts in the Champions League for Basel, who have booked their place in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition this season.

While RB Salzburg could be tempted to cash in on Oberlin if Newcastle agree to pay £20m, but would the striker himself be open to leaving Champions League football for a club that could well feature in the Championship next season?
