The Age claim that Newcastle, Barcelona and Chelsea are among the clubs tracking 17-year-old striker Garang Kuol from Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners – after scoring four goals in nine senior games so far.

Kuol, 17, joined the Mariners last summer and has since broken into the senior side. Towards the end of the 2021-22 term, he scored four goals in nine games – that is, despite not starting a single one of those nine senior outings.

This season, he is expected to become a more-senior member of the squad. He will surely be given the chance to start on a more-regular basis. However, he might not be with the Mariners for much longer, given the interest in him.

Australian outlet The Age report that Newcastle are at the front of the queue to sign Kuol. The Toon have held talks over a move in the January window – as have Barcelona. Chelsea are also said to be interested in teenage star Kuol.

Newcastle, Barcelona and Chelsea among clubs tracking Kuol

Kuol looks a serious talent. But the young star has got to make the right decision as he continues to progress. He is already tasting senior game time, and that must continue if he is to turn his potential into proven quality.

He does have time on his side. But in terms of those clubs that are looking at him, which is his best move? Newcastle have just brought in Alex Isak, and still have Chris Wood and Callum Wilson. The path into the first team is blocked.

Chelsea are lacking in strikers. Even if Armanda Broja is still at Chelsea by the end of the January window, the Blues need more in the final third. Barcelona could do with cover. Kuol might need a loan first, but can offer said cover.
