Could Newcastle United have an advantage in the pursuit of the Werder Bremen defender?

According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Newcastle United continue to monitor Werder Bremen defender Luca Caldirola, with the 26-year-old set to leave Werder Bremen this summer.
There is a potential boost for the Magpies with the centre-back allegedly unwilling to return to his homeland despite the interest of Bologna, potentially leaving Newcastle and Huddersfield to battle it out for the experienced Italian.
Caldirola has been blighted by injury over the last 12 months, first suffering a ligament injury and then, shortly after returning to action, fracturing a metatarsal.

As a result the defender only managed five Bundesliga appearances and while Bologna are said to be monitoring his situation, Di Marzio claims the player has no desire to return to Italy, potentially opening the door to a Premier League switch.
Newcastle could do with additional quality in the centre of their defence and, if he can prove that he has overcome his injury woes, Caldirola could be a savvy addition.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez will no doubt have a long list of potential new recruits and it will be interesting to see who ultimately arrives at St. James’ Park this summer.
Prior to moving to Bremen, Caldirola had spells with Vitesse Arnhem, Brescia and Cesena and recently had a loan spell at Darmstadt.
