According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have agreed a fee with Aston Villa for Matt Targett, as a permanent deal in the summer looks set to happen.

What’s the story?

Well, with Eddie Howe closing in on survival at Newcastle, the Magpies are already looking towards the summer transfer window.

The Chronicle believe a fee of £15m has been agreed between Newcastle and Aston Villa, with Targett enjoying his time on Tyneside.

It is also said that accommodation options have been put to the left-back, should he end up joining Newcastle on a permanent basis.

Since his move from Aston Villa in January, Targett has shone at Newcastle, where he has become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The 26-year-old has made four Premier League appearances for the Magpies, and is yet to taste defeat in a Newcastle shirt.

Targett has helped the Magpies to wins over Everton, Brentford and Brighton, while he also shone in the 1-1 draw against West Ham.

It’s very rare to see a deal which satisfies all parties, although in this case, everyone is a winner if this permanent deal materialises.

In Newcastle’s case, they get a solid left-back who has already proven himself to be a capable performer.

The £59,000-a-week man won the Players’ Player of the Season award at Villa Park last term, and has amassed 129 Premier League appearances.

For Aston Villa, they lose a solid, reliable defender, although Steven Gerrard won’t be too concerned after bringing in Lucas Digne.

The Frenchman is one of the best left-backs in England, if not Europe.

For just £15m, Newcastle appear to have got themselves a bargain.
