TeamTalk claim Eddie Howe will not only be welcoming a host of new signings this summer at Newcastle – but he will also wield the axe on as many as seven fringe players, including Miguel Almiron and Jamal Lewis.
The Toon’s squad is already somewhat bloated after bringing in five new faces in January – in the form of Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matty Targett, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier. A decision had to be made.
It saw Lewis, Ciaran Clark and Isaac Hayden left out of the 25-man squad for the second-half of the season – though the latter was due to injury. The summer is likely to see many more arrivals come in on Tyneside.
But to do so, they will have to let some go. The report from TeamTalk claims Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for Lewis, Almiron, Federico Fernandez, Dwight Gayle, Emil Krafth, Matt Ritchie and Clark.
The Newcastle seven: Harsh on some, or could more go?
If you are Ritchie, you are feeling hard done by. One of the more-consistent members of the side, he is a good option from the bench given his versatility. Almiron has failed to hit the hype, other than a few glimpses.
Lewis has not proved his transfer fee and Clark, Hayden, Fernandez, and Gayle can have little complaint. Jeff Hendrick is also a player that could go, currently on loan at QPR. Perhaps Karl Darlow, in goal.
Other fringe players that might be sold if cover is brought in include Paul Dummett, Sean Longstaff, Jacob Murphy and others. But the seven are likely to be sold this summer.
The one player that might feel it is harsh, is Krafth. The £5million signing (Sky Sports) has been in and out of the side, a player that Steve Bruce said will ‘never let you down’. But the signing of Trippier is a nail in the coffin.
