Barcelona’s Marc Cucurella reportedly wants to stay with the club, despite offers from Everton and Tottenham.
Barcelona’s Camp Nou
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo (Press Reader), Barcelona left back Marc Cucurella is expecting a new contract offer from the club, and wants to stay rather than join Everton or Tottenham.
The famed La Masia academy may have produced Barcelona stars such as Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi in recent years, but the well has dried up in recent years.
Hyped youngsters such as Gerard Deulofeu and Adama Traore have moved on in search of first-team football, as have the likes of Sandro and Munir, with the club preferring to focus on buying players in recent years.
That has led clubs to eye up La Masia talent for their own first teams, and one Barcelona talent attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window is left back Marc Cucurella.
Cucurella, 18, joined Barca from city rivals Espanyol back in 2012, and has been coming up through the ranks at La Masia with the goal of breaking into the Barca first team.
However, his contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he’s free to leave – and Mundo Deportivo claim he has offers from Chelsea, Everton, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, who are all sensing a bargain.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman (L) and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Unfortunately for those clubs, the report states that Cucurella not only expects to receive an offer to renew his contract, but considers Barcelona as his team of choice ahead of the chasing Premier League clubs.
The situation regarding his contract is described as ‘urgent’ given that Cucurella can actually sign a pre-contract agreement with another club right now, and Barcelona must move quickly to prevent him from leaving.
Given how Hector Bellerin has impressed since leaving Barcelona for Arsenal, it’s no surprise that Premier League clubs are looking towards another Barca left back with a view to bringing him to England – but if reports are to be believed, their chances of landing Cucurella have been dented.
