Middlesbrough have made Garry Monk their number one target following his departure from Leeds United, but there is another name they plan to consider.

A report in the Daily Mirror has suggested that Middlesbrough have earmarked Garry Monk as their number one target following his surprise resignation from Leeds earlier this week, but also have another name on their list.

The Mirror reports that Huddersfield Town’s David Wagner is someone that they plan to approach, even if the German leads the Terriers up to the Premier League in the upcoming Championship play-off final.

Wagner has done a tremendous job at the John Smith’s Stadium, surprising many by taking them into the promotion mix in the second tier, where they remained Newcastle and Brighton’s closest rivals for an automatic-promotion spot for much of the campaign.

The Mirror suggests that while Boro plan to approach Monk following his exit from Elland Road, Wagner will be the next name they turn to if the former Swansea boss decides to hold out for a Premier League job.

It would certainly be an ambitious move for Middlesbrough to try and tempt Wagner – who previously worked under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – to the Riverside Stadium if Huddersfield beat Reading at Wembley.

But perhaps Boro may be hoping to convince Wagner, that whatever division Huddersfield are playing in next season, Middlesbrough have considerably more potential. Whether Wagner would believe that to be true remains to be seen.
