League One Sunderland need a left-back but were left frustrated by Blackburn Rovers, Brentford, Hull City and Wigan Athletic.

Sunderland made bids for four different left-backs on August 8th, according to The Chronicle.
But with the transfer window slamming shut for clubs in the top two tiers of English football, Championship clubs moved quickly to snap up Callum Elder, Tom Pearce, Greg Cunningham and Dominic Thompson from under the nose of a disappointed Jack Ross.
It’s no secret that the Black Cats were looking to lure Pearce away from Leeds United before the 21-year-old eventually joined Wigan Athletic instead. But Sunderland’s interest in Elder, Cunningham and Thompson flew completely under the radar.
According to The Chronicle, all three were the subject of bids from the Wearside outfit before moving elsewhere instead.
Australian flyer Elder eventually left Leicester for Hull City while Blackburn signed Cunningham on loan after a poor 12 months at Cardiff. 19-year-old Thompson made the short trip across London by swapping Arsenal for Brentford, where he will provide competition for the highly-rated Rico Henry in Thomas Frank’s starting XI.

And, three weeks on, it seems that Sunderland are no closer to filling a major hole in their starting XI.
According to the Northern Echo, Morgan Fox of Sheffield Wednesday is their latest target but The Owls have already rejected a bid from the League One promotion hopefuls.
