According to the Daily Mail, Alan Irvine will be leaving West Ham United – and that could mean a return for Billy McKinlay.
Irvine has been a trusted lieutenant of David Moyes for many years, going back to their time together at Everton.
However, the Scot is quitting West Ham for personal reasons, with Irvine looking to move further north and away from London.
That would be a huge blow for Moyes early into the summer, and the report suggests that McKinlay could return to East London.
The 52-year-old was actually signed by David Moyes at Preston way back in 2001, but has more recently been known as a part of Moyes’ staff.
McKinlay joined him at Real Sociedad and Sunderland, then West Ham back in the 2017-18 season.
McKinlay wasn’t brought back when Moyes returned, but having left Stoke City in April, he could be in line for a Hammers comeback.
There are thought to be two other contenders in the running for the job, but McKinlay’s history with Moyes seemingly makes him the favourite.
