Report: Mousa Dembele wants three-year extension at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele’s future at the club could be in some doubt due to his contract demands.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Mousa Dembele’s hopes of signing a new deal with Tottenham could be dented by the fact that the Belgian wants to put pen to paper on a three-year extension with the club.

Dembele has been one of the Premier League’s best midfielders since his move from Fulham in 2012 and has been a crucial part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, providing that perfect balance in the middle of the park.

But it appears that there is the slightest possibility that Spurs could be forced into a tricky decision regarding the 30-year-old’s future at the end of the season when his current contract will have just one year to run.

The Telegraph reports that Dembele wants to agree a fresh deal with Tottenham – despite having interest from elsewhere – but hopes to extend his contract by a further three years. That will see the midfielder remain under contract until around his 35th birthday, and that seems to be leaving Spurs hesitating over what the best decision is.

Time to reward Dembele?

On paper, it probably appears to make little sense to offer Dembele the kind of terms that he is looking for – The Telegraph reports that he wants his wages to increase from £80,000 a week to £100,000 a week – but it would be no surprise if most Tottenham fans were keen for the club to take a gamble and try to get the midfielder tied down.

His injury record and age suggests that there is every chance that the deal could end up backfiring, but if he can stay fit for the majority of the coming years, Spurs will have no regrets about keeping Dembele.

He is so influential when he is at his best, and it would not be out of the question to suggest that he could remain as important to the side’s fortunes well into his 30s. And in today’s game, paying a key player £100,000 a week should not be something that Daniel Levy tries to avoid. It would be a risk, but surely it is a gamble worth taking.
