According to ESPN, Jose Mourinho has doubts over Matt Doherty’s chances of succeeding at Tottenham, and is considering putting him up for sale.
The report claims that the ex-Chelsea boss is frustrated at the 15-cap Republic of Ireland international’s lack of progress under his tutelage.
Spurs signed the 29-year-old from Wolves back in August for a fee of £14.7 million, but he has proven to be a disappointing purchase so far.
Doherty has started just nine of Tottenham’s 24 Premier League games, as Mourinho opts to start Serge Aurier more often than not.
ESPN add that Mourinho could be heard berating the Tottenham No.2 from the sidelines during the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool back on January 28th.
It very much seems as if Doherty could be axed unless his performances improve very, very quickly.
ESPN also mention that Aurier was up for sale over the summer, but no club could find an agreement to sign him from Tottenham.
That means Mourinho has two right-backs who he’s far from convinced about, after selling Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton.
In our view, if neither Aurier and Doherty can prove themselves worthy of the Portuguese coach’s trust, we could see some activity in the right-back department for Spurs this summer.
