Manchester United have been linked with a big-money move for the Greece international.

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to bid a whopping £47.6million for AS Roma centre-back Konstantinos Manolas.

United have been linked with a new defender for some time now, with the Sun claiming they have reached an impasse in their negotiations regarding Benfica player Victor Lindelof.

The return to fitness and form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo means Mourinho is not exactly desperate to strengthen in that area, but the Argentine in particular still looks to be on borrowed time given his penchant for rash tackles.

With Eric Bailly currently away with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, and the matches coming thick and fast for United, it would be no surprise to see them sign another defender despite Mourinho’s claims to the contrary.

Manolas is a 25-year-old Greece international who has turned out 107 times for Roma to date, including 21 times this season.

As a vital part of the Italian side’s squad, they will not want to part company with him unless they get an offer too good to refuse.

The reported £47.6million would certainly be in that category, however many fans will feel the money would be better spent on Lindelof given his innate talent and the fact that he is three years Manolas’s junior.
