According to The Mirror, Jose Mourinho is facing a dressing room backlash after being critical of his Tottenham players’ work rate in the 1-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday.
The ex-Chelsea boss reportedly branded his players “lazy”, which has apparently annoyed squad members who think the Portuguese coach is deflecting blame.
Against Everton Carlo Ancelotti’s men had six more shots than Spurs, completed 13 more dribbles and won ten more tackles in what was a limp display from Tottenham.
Judging by those numbers, you could argue the Toffees were more up for it.
However, by watching the game you could see Everton had a clear plan, whereas Spurs didn’t appear to.
Now, there’s a strong sense of déjà vu.
Mourinho’s legacy at Manchester United became stained by public criticism of his players.
The ex-Porto boss labelled Paul Pogba a “virus” and attacked Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard by saying they lacked maturity.
Mourinho also reportedly left his players stunned by his treatment of Shaw in particular, with some believing the left-back was bullied.
As we now know, that managerial style didn’t transpire into great results on the pitch as the 57-year-old was eventually sacked.
Should he decide to go down a similar route at Tottenham, history doesn’t suggest some of his methods will work this time either.
