Manchester United could be about to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United are poised to win the race for Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst, ahead of Everton, Leicester City and Newcastle United.
The Red Devils are set for Champions League football again next season after Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 win over Manchester City, and manager Jose Mourinho will be looking for more additions to his squad.
However, it seems that United’s first summer signing may be one with an eye on the future, as it’s claimed that a deal for Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst is close.
The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer following a bizarre stand-off with Wednesday, and United are now thought to be in pole position to sign the striker for compensation this summer.
Whilst Everton, Leicester City and Newcastle United are also keen to sign Hirst, United have waded into the race and look set to secure his signature.
The teenager has played just twice for the Wednesday first team this season due to the fact that he hasn’t signed a new deal, with a parting of the ways inevitable come the end of the season.
Having hit 14 goals in 27 outings for England across various youth levels though, Hirst is a major talent for the future, and it’s no great surprise that Premier League clubs are vying for his signature.
A move to United would be something of a dream move for the youngster, and would even provide a weird sense of irony, given that Hirst’s father David was a top target for United way back in 1992.
