It was reported this week that Tottenham Hotspur were winning the race to sign Lorenzo Insigne.
Journalist Fabio Santini revealed that Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici is a fan and was the closest of anybody to signing the 30-year-old, who will not be extending his Napoli contract.
However, there has been a potentially massive spanner thrown into the works – and by a Major League Soccer team.
Among the clubs chasing Insigne is Toronto FC who, according to Calciomercato, have made him a ‘monster’ offer to come to Canada.
The Italian publication has reported that the Italy international has been offered £326,000 per week to join them.
Calciomercato add that the Tottenham-linked attacker has no offers from anybody else, despite a lot of speculation about a transfer to the Premier League.
Spurs should walk away
Listen, Insigne is obviously a good footballer but if these reports are true, it isn’t worth it for Tottenham.
We’re talking about a 30-year-old footballer who will decline from here on in, so why would the Lilywhites want to break the bank to compete with Toronto’s reported offer?
There’s no denying that the Napoli attacker would be a fine addition, but that’s in the short term.
Long term, there’s no way the Lilywhites will or should pay him the sort of money Toronto are prepared to because, well, he isn’t an A-list footballer and never has been.
