The Scottish Sun reported on Wednesday that Rangers had been eyeing Millwall’s Jake Cooper as Alves nears a return to Italian football with Parma.
However, Sky Sports claims Millwall are not interest in selling Cooper, who was a key member of the Lions side which made an unexpected challenge for the top six last season and boasted the Championship’s third-tightest defence.
And Neil Harris’s side are in a strong-ish position to rebuff any Rangers approach, with the 23-year-old having two years left to run on his contract at the Den.
Steven Gerrard has already added two new centre-backs to his squad, in the shape of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.
And the Rangers manager can also call upon Fabio Cardoso, Ross McCrorie and Aidan Wilson in Cooper’s position.
