Serie A challengers AC Milan reportedly want Premier League runner-up Lovren or Celtic’s Scottish Premiership champion Ajer.
AC Milan have made contact with Celtic about signing Kristoffer Ajer, according to Tuttomercatoweb, after being potentially priced out of a deal for Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren.
It has been yet another summer of change at the San Siro.
Four players have been signed and it is telling that all but one of those are 22 and under. Clearly, Milan are prioritising youth and potential, paying big to sign Real Madrid’s Theo Hernandez and Lille forward Rafael Leao.
And reports in Italy on Friday claim that the Rossoneri have now turned their focus to Celtic’s 21-year-old Norway international.
Ajer ticks a lot of boxes for a Milan side now coached by former Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo, with the seven-time Champions of Europe making contact with the Scottish Premiership champions.
Lovren is the other defender in Milan’s sights but Liverpool want at least £13.5 million for a player who turned 30 last month. Ajer is nine years younger and, while Lovren’s best years are possibly behind him, the Scandinavian has it all to come.
The chances are, however, that Celtic will demand more than £13.5 million if Milan firm up their interest. As the Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney sagas show, Celtic aren’t simply going to give away their best young talent. If Milan want Ajer, they will have to pay up.
