According to a report from The Telegraph, Mikel Arteta is interested in speaking to Newcastle about possibly succeeding Rafa Benitez, but does have a ‘lot of concerns’ about taking the job at St James’ Park.

The Magpies hierarchy are looking for the person who is going to take charge from next season following the recent announcement that Benitez will leave the club when his deal expires this summer.

There is a huge amount of disappointment amongst the Toon Army ahead of Benitez’s imminent departure, and there is a similar amount of apprehension regarding who his successor will be.

The Telegraph reports that both Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard are attracting attention, as is Arteta, who has been assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City since 2016.

However, the report notes that sources close to the former Everton and Arsenal midfielder have suggested that he has a lot of concerns about taking the job despite being willing to hear Newcastle out as he looks to become a manager in his own right.

Newcastle’s next manager is going to be under plenty of pressure as he looks to fill the large shoes that Benitez has left behind on Tyneside. Arteta will know all about pressure having worked so closely with Guardiola over the last few years, but it would still be a gamble for the Magpies to appoint the Spaniard – if he is open to taking the job.
