Mike Ashley is reportedly prepared to drop his asking price for Newcastle United as he looks to sell the club.

Mike Ashley will apparently consider selling Newcastle United should he receive any offers of around £300 million, according to a report from the Shields Gazette.

The Toon Army would have really started to hope that the end of Ashley’s tenure was nigh when he put the club up for sale 11 months ago – as reported by the Shields Gazette – but he has so far not been able to find a buyer, with the high-profile talks with Amanda Staveley seemingly coming to nothing last season.

Newcastle fans must be wondering whether Ashley’s tenure at St James’ Park will ever come to an end. But the Shields Gazette has hinted that that end may have potentially moved slightly closer as he has dropped his asking price from £380 million to around £300 million.

It appears to be a positive move for those who want Ashley gone, but given the twists and turns that have come during his time as owner, it would be no surprise if no fans were celebrating until any sale has gone through and Ashley is definitely out of the club.

As reported by the Shields Gazette, there have been protests against the owner in recent times. And it seems unlikely that the fans will stop voicing their discontent while Ashley remains in charge.

It does appear to be a step in the right direction. Newcastle has so much potential as a club, and with Rafa Benitez at the helm, the Magpies already have the foundations in place to build on the pitch as well as off it.

And for those who want Ashley gone, they will be hoping that the reported drop in asking price proves to be the turning point in his quest to sell the club and bring an end to an extremely turbulent spell in the its history.
