According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is supporting the club’s move for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen – but one bid has already been rejected.
The Magpies sit just one point clear of the relegation zone after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, and it’s clear that Benitez needs new signings before next week’s transfer deadline.
Given that both Joselu and Dwight Gayle have struggled to score consistently, finding a new striker has to be a priority, and Newcastle may even push to break their transfer record in the final week of the transfer window.
The Chronicle report that Newcastle are locked in talks with Dutch side Feyenoord about a deal for striker Nicolai Jorgensen, though they have already had one offer rejected.
It’s claimed that Feyenoord want £20million for their star striker, but Newcastle aren’t backing down, and owner Mike Ashley has given his approval to a move for the forward, which would break that 13-year transfer record.
Jorgensen, 27, hit 51 goals in 137 games for Copenhagen before earning his 2016 move to Feyenoord, where he smashed 21 goals in 32 league games last season to fire Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title.
This term, Jorgensen has notched nine goals in 18 appearances, including eight goals in his last 10 games, as the Danish international once again hits the goal trail.
With Feyenoord re-signing club hero Robin van Persie on Friday, Newcastle are seemingly attempting to strike a deal for Jorgensen – but whether they can agree a fee remains to be seen.
