Almiron is nearing his Newcastle debut against Wolves on Monday.

The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle United are paying playmaker Miguel Almiron £60,000 a week after he joined the club as part of a club-record deal from MLS side Atlanta United on deadline day.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle for a reported £21million after starring for Atlanta in their MLS Cup triumph last season. Almiron scored 13 goals and created 13 more from attacking midfield.

His move to Tyneside saw the 14-year-old record of Michael Owen’s move from Real Madrid finally broken, and he became the biggest signing of owner Mike Ashley’s tenure as The Toon look to avoid the drop.

The Paraguay international has been in Paris this week to obtain a working Visa to allow him to train and play for Newcastle following his move, which he was granted ahead of Wednesday’s training session.

He is now in line to make his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night. The Telegraph report that the fleet-footed playmaker is the club’s second-highest earner, with Spotrac stating only Jonjo Shelvey earns more.

England cap Shelvey is on £70,000 a week, while Mo Diame, Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez are in joint third on the club’s list of wages – earning £45,000 a week, a considerable amount less than Almiron.

It is a statement of intent from not only Newcastle, but also owner Ashley, who could have finally decided to invest in his side in order to keep Rafa Benitez with the manager’s contract ending in the summer.
