Liverpool will allegedly not allow Simon Mignolet to leave despite him reportedly wanting to do so; should they have kept Danny Ward after all?

Liverpool will not let Simon Mignolet leave the club this week despite the goalkeeper’s desire to play regular first team football, reports the Guardian.

The Reds want Mignolet to act as backup to summer signing Allison after they allowed Loris Karius to join Besiktas on a two-year loan – a decision the 30-year-old described as “bizarre”.

“I find it bizarre that Karius was loaned while I also had options to be loaned, but for some reason that was not possible. The transfer of Karius doesn’t change anything for me. I have always been clear: I want to play,” the stopper told Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws.

“Being No.2 or No.3 makes little difference. Playing minutes is the most important thing. Nobody has said anything to me after the departure of Loris. So I don’t know what my future at Liverpool is. We will see what happens this week.”

Mignolet clearly wants to exit Anfield, but allowing the Belgium international to do so would leave manager Jurgen Klopp with only Caoimhin Kelleher and Kamil Grabara as reserve options in goal, with both players being 19 and having never made a first team appearance for the Premier League club.

Mistake selling Danny Ward?

The arrival of Allison from Roma in £66.8m deal (BBC) meant the Merseysiders had four senior ‘keepers at the club and as a result Ward was sold to Leicester City for £12.5m.

With Kasper Schmeichel still the established number one at the King Power Stadium this seemed a slightly odd move for the Welshman as he sought more regular game time himself.

Yet since then Karius has moved on and Mignolet wants to do the same. Ward appears to be happy to be second choice behind Schmeichel so would he not have been perfect to act as backup to Allison?
