Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing Southampton striker Charlie Austin.
Aston Villa and Wolves are keen on adding Southampton striker Charlie Austin to their squads this month, according to a report.
The Telegraph claims that the 29-year-old will leave St Mary’s before the January transfer window shuts and there are a number of clubs interested in his services.
The report states that Villa want to strengthen their forward line, with Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham unlikely to stay at the club beyond the summer.
It also says that Wolves are eager to add to their attacking line and have viewed Austin as a potential permanent deal – his contract at Southampton runs out in the summer of 2020, according to transfermarkt.
Austin has played 16 Premier League matches this season, scoring two goals [transfermarkt], and has only started two games under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Villa, who are managed by Dean Smith, are looking to earn promotion to the Premier League and currently have Chelsea’s Abraham on their books until the end of the campaign.
The 21-year-old, who netted a brace to help his side beat Ipswich Town on Saturday [BBC Sport], has scored an impressive 19 goals from his 23 league games this season, according to transfermarkt.
The above report also claims that the Saints will not price Austin out of a move as the former playoff winner wants regular game time.
In 2014, under the stewardship of Harry Redknapp, Austin started and helped QPR win the playoff final against Derby, with Bobby Zamora netting a late winner [BBC Sport].
During his career, Austin has played 129 matches in the second tier of English football, scoring 66 goals for the likes of QPR and Burnley.
In the Premier League, he has found the back of the net on 34 occasions from his 97 games and is three short of reaching a landmark 100 matches in England’s top-flight.
