Burnley and West Bromwich Albion could move for the Middlesbrough striker ahead of next week’s deadline.
Middlesbrough’s Britt Assombalonga is wanted by Burnley and West Bromwich Albion after the latter two clubs failed to agree a deal for Jay Rodriguez, according to the Sun.
The newspaper claims Burnley were unsuccessful with a £16 million offer for Rodriguez, and will consider turning to Assombalonga as an alternative to the West Brom striker.
But the Black Country club are also said to be keen on the DR Congo international, who was managed by the Clarets’ Sean Dyche at Watford and has scored 15 Championship goals since his £15 million transfer to Middlesbrough last summer.
According to the Sun, however, Baggies Darren Moore can only spend what he generates from sales, which could leave Burnley in the driving seat for Assombalonga – although that could change if West Brom move players on this week.
Merry-goal-round?
Middlesbrough have already sold one of their strikers in the summer transfer window – Patrick Bamford to Leeds United – but have been linked with moves for Ipswich Town’s Martyn Waghorn and West Ham United’s Jordan Hugill this week.
And it is plausible that Assombalonga could be sold to fund deals for either player, or both.
