According to the Teesside Gazette, Middlesbrough officials would be stunned if assistant manager Steve Agnew left the club to join Steve Bruce at Aston Villa.
Having told Sky Sports that he has held talks with Villa, Bruce – out of work having left Hull City over the summer – is the hot favourite to replace Roberto Di Matteo in the Villa Park hot seat.

Whilst the move isn’t done yet, many believe the former Birmingham City boss will be in charge for Villa’s local derby with Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend, and he will be looking to put together his coaching staff quickly.
The Sun reported on Sunday that, should Bruce land the job, he will look to reunite with Steve Agnew, who is currently serving as Middlesbrough’s assistant manager.

Agnew, 50, was appointed as Bruce’s assistant manager at Hull back in 2012, and worked alongside Bruce for more than two years before heading back to former club Middlesbrough.
Now, with Bruce unlikely to want to keep Di Matteo’s assistant Steve Clarke, it’s believed that he will want to reunite with Agnew – but that would of course involve dropping from the Premier League to the Championship.

Now, the Teesside Gazette report that Middlesbrough would be surprised to see Agnew swap the Riverside Stadium for Villa Park, though they wouldn’t be shocked to see Bruce make a move for him.
Middlesbrough allegedly won’t welcome any interest for Agnew, who is described as being ‘influential’ at Boro, and the Daily Mail have since reported that Bruce could instead target Manchester United’s Warren Joyce as his assistant instead.
