Middlesbrough are now keen on Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers.

According to BT Sport via the Press Association, Middlesbrough are preparing a move to sign Brentford playmaker Romaine Sawyers during this month’s transfer window.

Boro aren’t exactly free-scoring under Tony Pulis, and he is believed to be looking for more creativity from midfield to give his side more of a cutting edge.

Sawyers is now believed to be a top target, with Boro potentially set to test the water with a bid for the Brentford man before this month’s transfer window ends.

Sawyers, 27, is out of contract in 2020, meaning he is now inside the last 18 months of his deal and may well be sold if a good enough offer arrives.

This could be an absolute disaster for Aston Villa, as it’s noted that they are keen to sign Sawyers but are likely to have to wait until summer to launch a bid for him.

Sawyers worked with Villa boss Dean Smith at Walsall and Brentford, so his interest in working with the Saint Kitts and Nevis international yet again is far from a shock.

Yet with Villa having a host of big earners in a poorly balanced squad, Smith really needs to sell before he can buy, and a bid for Sawyers may only be possible at the end of the season.

Boro could now scupper those plans by signing Sawyers this month, in what would be a cunning move from Pulis and co.
