Middlesbrough reportedly want the Norwich City man….and Leeds United fans aren’t happy one bit.

The Mirror has reported that Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk is willing to stump up the £5 million needed to sign Leeds United-linked Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson.

It was reported by The Mirror earlier in the week that Leeds wanted to re-sign their former captain, who had been with the Yorkshire club from the age of nine until his sale in 2012.

United were quoted a relatively large price for the 29-year-old, however, and the trail appears to have gone cold a little bit.

But The Mirror have reported that Boro manager Monk – who sensationally quit Leeds in May – is also a fan of the midfielder and the 38-year-old is willing to meet Norwich’s valuation.

Fans of the Whites already have very little time for Monk following his shock exit last month, but the former Swansea boss would be even more despised if he were to sign Howson, if the reaction on Twitter is anything to go by.

Howson remains a fine midfielder but at £5 million, Leeds might be better off exploring other avenues.

Middlesbrough have parachute payements following their relegation from the Premier League, meaning they have more of a warchest, and it is unlikely that United are flexing the same sort of financial muscle at the moment.
