Middlesbrough are reportedly pursuing Reading defender Chris Gunter.

According to The Mirror, Middlesbrough are interested in signing Reading defender Chris Gunter as Garry Monk looks to re-tool his squad.

Monk arrived as Boro’s new manager last month following Aitor Karanka’s departure and the end of Steve Agnew’s time as caretaker manager, with the former Leeds boss looking to take the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Another right back could be on Monk’s wish list given that Emilio Nsue was sold to Birmingham in January, Calum Chambers has returned to parent club Arsenal following the end of his loan spell, and question marks hang over the future of Antonio Barragan.

Now, The Mirror report that Boro are now interested in signing Reading defender Chris Gunter, with the Welsh international claimed to be a target for manager Monk.

Gunter, 27, was a key part of the Reading side which reached the Championship play-off final last season, as he played 49 games in all competitions, but his performances could now earn him a move elsewhere.

Formerly of Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, Gunter has been a consistent performer for many years now, and that’s what Monk may want at right back, similar to how Luke Ayling was a key part of his Leeds team last term.

It remains to be seen whether Reading would be willing to sell Gunter, given that he is such a reliable performer for Jaap Stam, but Middlesbrough may well try and tempt their Championship rivals into a deal.
