Middlesbrough are reportedly keen to sign Aston Villa midfielder Birkir Bjarnason.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa midfielder Birkir Bjarnason is attracting the attention of Middlesbrough as the Villans’ financial concerns leave their supporters somewhat fearing what is come during the remaining weeks of the window.

Having missed out on promotion out of the Championship last season, Steve Bruce appears to have had his hands tied in terms of what business he can get done this summer.

No signings have been brought in, and the fans would be forgiven for expecting a number of departures. And one of the players who may be offered the chance to move away is Bjarnason.

TEAMtalk reports that Boro are eyeing a move for the Iceland international, who arrived at Villa Park for £1.7 million in January 2017 – as reported by the Daily Star.

The 30-year-old has endured an incredibly mixed time since joining from Basel. It initially appeared that he was going to go down as a disappointing flop after struggling to make an impact at Villa Park.

However, he was considerably more impressive during his first full season with the Villans, scoring three goals and contributing two assists in the Championship. He went on to play all of Iceland’s group-stage games at the World Cup, with the standout result obviously coming in the draw with Argentina.

Losing him to a Championship rival would be a blow for Villa, but if a tempting offer comes in, perhaps Bruce will have little choice but to seriously consider letting him move on.
