Middlesbrough claimed to hold interest in Crystal Palace winger who is interesting former club Newcastle United.
Middlesbrough are hoping to beat Newcastle United to the signature of winger Andros Townsend, according to The Times.
Townsend quit Newcastle after just six months when they were relegated in the summer, to sign with Crystal Palace.
At the weekend it was reported by The Mail that Newcastle are keen on re-signing the winger, who has struggled to make an impact at Palace.

Despite his swift exit from the club he is still held in high regard by many Newcastle supporters, and would be welcomed back, especially if he was willing to return mid-season while they are in the Championship.
Townsend’s relations with Newcastle fans could take a step in a whole other direction, if he signs with Middlesbrough.

Aitor Karanka’s side would be able to offer Townsend the chance to immediately resume his career in the Premier League, and they do not look in danger of relegation, despite sitting in the bottom half of the table.
Middlesbrough have invested heavily in strikers over the past year but have struggled to score goals, and adding Townsend could help them kick on.
