Middlesbrough have reportedly added the Newcastle United striker to their list, which also contains Nottingham Forest’s Assombalonga.

The Sun reports that Middlesbrough could test Newcastle United’s resolve with a bid for Dwight Gayle – if their move for Nottingham Forest’s Britt Assombalonga fails.

It is claimed that Garry Monk, the new Middlesbrough boss, is battling Burnley for Assombalonga’s signature, with the Forest player said to be valued at £15 million.

But should the Teessiders lose out to the Premier League side, they are prepared to turn their attention to Gayle, according to The Sun.

Gayle moved to Newcastle for a reported £10 million during last summer’s transfer window, and promptly fired them to the Championship title with 23 goals.

Nevertheless, it is claimed that Gayle’s Newcastle place could be under threat if manager Rafa Benitez ‘gets his wish’ of landing a new striker.

Middlesbrough are said to be willing to spend more than the £10 million they initially planned to on Assombalonga, who scored 14 goals in 20 league starts for Nottingham Forest last term.

But Burnley are at risk of losing their top scorer, Andre Gray, this summer, with the 26-year-old having recently entered the final 12 months of his deal at Turf Moor, and could be a threat to any Boro move.
