Leeds United and Middlesbrough are in a battle to sign Norwich City’s Jonny Howson.

According to the Northern Echo, Middlesbrough believe that they could sign Jonny Howson ahead of Leeds United – as they feel they can persuade the Norwich City midfielder they are a better bet for promotion.

Middlesbrough are among the favourites to go up from the Championship this season, following the appointment of Garry Monk.

Leeds, meanwhile, are also cautiously optimistic about their own prospects – but there is far more uncertainty around Elland Road.

Leeds have an unproven manager in Thomas Christiansen, and they have generally targeted the European market so far.

The Whites do want to bring in Howson though, who began his career at Leeds.

But Boro are hoping to come out on top for the £4million-rated midfielder.

Monk reportedly feels that he can make a convincing argument, which will persuade Howson to move to the Riverside Stadium over his former club.

Leeds are yet to make a bid for Howson, but were the first team to announce their interest in the Norwich man this summer.
