According to a report in the Daily Mail, Mick McCarthy was in Sunderland on personal business.

McCarthy is among the favourites to take over at Sunderland, and the rumours that he could take over from Chris Coleman only grew stronger when he was spotted on Wearside yesterday.

However, the Mail suggest McCarthy was in the North East on personal business – rather than Sunderland job related matters.

McCarthy has been in charge at Sunderland before, between 2003 and 2006, and he did an impressive job.

McCarthy is still highly regarded at the Stadium of Light, and he is currently available.

The 57-year-old boss left Ipswich Town last month, ending his six-year stay with the Tractor Boys.

Sunderland have a great deal of work to do, if they are to turn things around next season.

The Black Cats are set to face a mass exodus following their relegation to League One, meaning whoever takes charge at Sunderland has a huge rebuilding job on his hands.
