Well, we still don’t quite know what’s happening with the Newcastle United takeover.
The Premier League has taken the best part of two months to conduct their background check on Saudi Public Investment Fund following a £300 million deal to buy the club from Mike Ashley.
Newcastle fans have been waiting a long time to see the back of Ashley – who bought the Magpies in 2007 – and a collapsed takeover would really, really hurt at this stage.
Fortunately, there’s another person reportedly interested in buying the St James’s Park club.
Media tycoon Henry Mauriss is reported to be a plan-b option by Newcastle and The Chronicle has provided an update on the American.
According to that publication, Mauriss has already held talks with Ashley’s people, but no bid has been submitted as of yet.
The good news here is that it seems like Mauriss’s interest is fairly concrete, and it was first reported back in April, so even if – and it’s a big IF – the Saudi group fail then there could still be an end of the Ashley era.
