According to a report from Marca, Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic wants to stay in the Premier League – possibly alerting other top flight clubs.

The Blues took Kovacic on loan from Real Madrid in August after selling goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to the Spanish giants, and the Croatian was seen as an exciting signing.

He hasn’t really hit the heights expected of him though, contributing no goals and two assists for Chelsea this season, despite appearing in 26 Premier League games.

Kovacic’s future has become complicated due to Chelsea’s transfer ban, as he wouldn’t be able to complete a permanent move from Madrid to London – but Marca report that he still wants to join a Premier League club, even if it’s a rival.

Time for Tottenham strike?

Of all the Premier League clubs Kovacic could join this summer, Tottenham stand out as a potential candidate. Spanish newspaper AS reported in December that Spurs were looking to hijack and permanent move by Chelsea this summer.

With Chelsea potentially out of the picture now, Spurs would make sense as the right club for Kovacic, especially as he feels happy and comfortable in London right now.

Tottenham also desperately need a new midfielder this summer, and Kovacic’s ability on the ball would make him a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele following his move to China in January.

The timing may now be right for Spurs to snap up Kovacic, and whilst his priority remains staying with Chelsea, he may have to look at alternatives; Tottenham should present themselves as one.
