Napoli and Liverpool appear to have no chance of luring Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano who is headed for a contract extension.
The Javier Mascherano saga looks set to end in disappointment for Napoli with reports suggesting the Argentina international will renew his contract at Barcelona.
Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has been tracking Mascherano for some time and seemed determined to link up again with the man he coached at Liverpool.
Mascherano’s discontent at being used as a defender rather than a defensive midfielder seemed to have opened the door to an approach.
However, new Barcelona boss Luis Enrique sees Mascherano as a key component in his squad and appears to have made the promises necessary to appease him.
It is reported that the ex-Liverpool man is ready to commit to a new deal lasting until 2018 and that all the details will be completed by Sunday.
Mascherano and his agent are said to be in Barcelona finishing off the agreement that will rule out any chance of switch to Napoli or Liverpool.
Napoli will now have to turn their attentions to their other targets, which include Tottenham man Sandro and Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons.
