According to RMC Sport, Marseille have resumed talks with Aston Villa over a deal to sign midfielder Idrissa Gueye – but his wages are a problem.
Gueye, 26, was one of a number of signings made by Villa last summer, and was signed from Lille with the intention of being Fabian Delph’s replacement following his move to Manchester City.
Villa struggled throughout last season and were ultimately relegated as one of the worst teams in Premier League history, but Gueye was one of very few players to come out with some credit.
The Senegal international turned in some impressive performances, providing energy and bite in the middle of the park, with outstanding tackling and interception stats last term, rivalling Leicester City star N’Golo Kante.
Those displays seemingly haven’t gone unnoticed, as RMC Sport report that Marseille want to take Gueye back to France this summer, and have resumed talks with Villa about a possible deal this summer.
Marseille are cash-strapped and look set to sell star striker Michy Batshuayi to raise funds, but it’s claimed that Gueye wants to leave Villa and is being targeted as a possible addition for Marseille – but they face a major problem in their bid to sign the midfielder.
It’s claimed that Gueye’s wages are a major problem for Marseille in their current financial situation, and are now hoping to land Gueye on a season-long loan with a view to purchase the player in a year’s time.
Whether Villa want to agree such a deal remains to be seen, but with the player seemingly looking to leave rather than play in the Championship, it seems that Gueye will be playing elsewhere next season one way or another.
