Kenny Miller is currently coming to the end of his contract at Ibrox, but that would not be the case if it was left up to former Glasgow Rangers boss Mark Warburton it seems.
Rangers’ Kenny Miller celebrates scoring
A report in The Scottish Sun has suggested that former Rangers boss Mark Warburton tried on numerous occasions to get the board to hand Kenny Miller a new contract before his departure.
Miller’s current deal at Ibrox is set to expire at the end of the season, and The Scottish Sun is reporting that a new contract is unlikely despite the 37-year-old leading the club’s goalscoring charts in the Scottish Premiership.
While Pedro Caixinha would be forgiven for not having made his mind up on what he would prefer Miller’s future to look like having only taken charge of a handful of games, The Scottish Sun reports that his predecessor was adamant that the veteran striker still had a role to play beyond this season.
The Scottish Sun suggests that Warburton tried a number of times to get the Gers board to give an extension the green light, but his efforts ultimately came to nothing.
Former Rangers manager Mark Warburton
While many of the Ibrox faithful may not remember some of Warburton’s decisions from this season too fondly, it could surely be argued that he was making a wise call trying to get Miller’s deal extended.
Miller may not be the long-term answer, and may not even have that great a role to play next season, but with all of the other strikers failing to really grasp their chance, Caixinha surely needs to go into the summer with one forward he can rely on to make an impact next season in case their dealings in the transfer market do not go exactly to plan.
