According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (30/6; page 59), the potential takeover at Sunderland appears to be in doubt with Mark Campbell’s consortium unwilling to meet the £53 million asking price.
The Black Cats have been linked with a change of ownership for some time now, and it appeared that Campbell’s group were set to buy the club from Stewart Donald, who has steadied the waters at the Stadium of Light.
Campbell was reportedly set to take over as chairman and a director of football had been lined up as a deal moved closer. But a late spanner has been thrown into the works, it seems.
The Sun on Sunday (30/6; page 59) reports that the consortium are haggling over the asking price after learning of other debt during due diligence, and the group are not prepared to meet the £53 million valuation.
Last thing Jack Ross needs?
With Sunderland yet to make a signing this summer, it is probably not too far-fetched to suggest that Jack Ross may have been waiting for the takeover to go through before getting fully stuck into his transfer plans.
So this latest setback could be a real blow. The potential uncertainty will do the club few favours as they look to secure promotion at the second time of asking.
Ross may well be hoping that the takeover gets back on track – if it really is in doubt – or the plug is completely pulled so he can get on with the changes that he wishes to make to his squad.
