Marco Silvestri is present on Leeds United’s pre-season tour and is vying for a place in Thomas Christiansen’s plans.
It was expected that Marco Silvestri would leave Leeds United this summer. The Italian did not play a single minute of Championship football last season after Gary Monk brought in the evergreen veteran Rob Green.
And any chances he had of wrestling back his starting place under successor Thomas Christiansen appeared to hit the buffers when Leeds signed Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen.
Thomas Christiansen has three senior goalkeepers at his disposal
Yet, it now appears that Silvestri may be handed a lifeline to prove himself under the Spanish manager in pre-season. The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Silvestri has been included in Christiansen’s tour of Austria and is vying for a place in the squad for the upcoming campaign.
This is despite the Massimo Cellino signing being heavily linked with a return to his homeland earlier this summer, the Yorkshire Evening Post claiming that Serie A side Bologna were keen.
However, it appears that Silvestri will at least be given the chance to prove his worth, though his long-term future at Elland Road remains uncertain. It is likely that the 26-year-old will start the season as third choice ‘keeper, behind Wiedwald and Green in the pecking order.
Silvestri made just six appearances last season, all in the cups
However, no one knows how Wiedwald, who conceded two goals per game on average last season, will adapt to English football.
And Green too has been targeted by Championship rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough this summer, according to The Sun, with the North East desperately in need of a new goalkeeper.
Therefore, you wonder whether Silvestri is being kept aside for a rainy day.
