Sky Sports claim former Watford and Hull City manager Marco Silva is a contender for the vacant managerial role at Leeds United as he is a “popular option” among the Leeds board.

Leeds decided to sack Thomas Christiansen on Sunday evening after the Whites suffered a 4-1 loss to Cardiff City at Elland Road the day before, with Gaetano Berardi shown a red card.

A dismal run of form has seen the Whites go winless in seven games, losing five and drawing two – picking up four red cards in the process. They now sit in tenth place, and have already been knocked out of the FA Cup.

The likes of Gordon Strachan, Simon Grayson and Steve McClaren have been linked, but it appears that 6/1 shot Silva could be a stronger option than most as he is liked by the Leeds hierarchy.

The 40-year-old is currently looking for a new job after being somewhat harshly sacked by Watford earlier this season, after the Hornets rejected Everton’s approach to land the Portuguese boss.

Better than Christiansen?

Christiansen’s downfall at Elland Road was due to a lack of tactical nous. Leeds boast a squad that need to be playing on the counter attack, but instead the Spaniard has tried to pack the midfield with 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 systems.

In contract, Silva has been praised for his use of tactics and the former Olympiakos manager could look to use a three-man defence at Elland Road which would bring allow Leeds to counter attack with full effect.

Christiansen had little means by way in which of a plan B, winning just one Championship match after going behind all season. Silva would give Leeds’ attackers the freedom to attack on the counter, drawing the best from his players.
