Lyon defender Marcelo was in talks over a move to Liverpool just a matter of months ago; now he’s about to have his contract terminated.
Liverpool were desperate for a new centre back or two on deadline day back in February.
In the end, Preston defender Ben Davies joined permanently before Ozan Kabak arrived on loan from Schalke.
Neither player will feature for the Reds this season; Davies is off to Sheffield United on loan and Kabak is stuck with Schalke as things stand.
Another player Liverpool considered was Lyon veteran Marcelo, who could have offered an experienced option at Anfield.
L’Equipe reported that Liverpool only offered Marcelo a six-month deal, which he wasn’t interested in, and the defender admitted that there were talks with his agent.
Marcelo penned a new two-year deal in March as he committed his future to Lyon, but a remarkable turnaround means he is now set to become a free agent.

Marcelo endured an absolute nightmare against Angers on Sunday. He scored a comical own goal and was ripped apart by former Everton youngster Mohamed-Ali Cho throughout.
The 34-year-old was so bad that Foot Mercato report Lyon are now attempting to terminate Marcelo’s contract less than six months after he signed it.
From being close to signing for Liverpool to being on the scrapheap, this would cap off a remarkable nosedive for Marcelo, and maybe this is a major transfer escape for Michael Edwards.
