According to The Sun, Lyon defender Marcelo had a ‘good feeling’ about joining West Ham United before a deal fell through.
It’s claimed that the Brazilian centre back was ‘desperate’ to join the Hammers earlier this year, and was close to a move – only for the switch to collapse.
Marcelo still wants a Premier League move, and a source close to him suggested that there was a ‘good feeling’ about West Ham despite other clubs wanting him.
West Ham are described as being a ‘great opportunity’ for Marcelo, who can soon be signed on a free transfer with his Lyon deal running down.
Marcelo, 33, has turned out for the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Hannover, Besiktas and Lyon, making him a hugely experienced performer.
Is there still a spot for him at West Ham? Well, Fabian Balbuena has resurrected his career and Craig Dawson has arrived on loan, meaning an experienced centre back may no longer be all that important.
Marcelo turns 34 in May, and even though he can be signed for free, there have to be questions about whether he would be a smart investment now.
West Ham have too often sunk big wages into ageing players, and Marcelo would be another player just like that, when they really need to focus on signing younger players with potential, more like Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek and Said Benrahma.
